I experienced amazing care at the hands of this surgeon and his very dedicated and professional team. I was treated with respect and consider my care to be second to none. Add to this my surgery was carried out in a little over a week following my very first symptoms after which I recovered enough to be discharged home to convalesce. I found Mr Kaliapermal to be very respectful open and frank regarding my medical issues and certainly made me feel at ease despite facing the prospect of a craniotomy to remove a sizeable meningioma. My procedure went just as planned and recovery was swift, My family and I wish offer our sincere thanks for the skill and professionalism of Mr Kaliaperumal and members of his team and feel them to be truly amazing people.

I had decompression surgery in 2005 in the Edinburgh Western. My symptoms improved in some areas but, I was still left with severe headaches. In the past I always felt that I was not listened to and returned home having been advised that there was nothing else that could be done. Then I was passed over to Mr Gallo who proved to be first class and advised more surgery to enhance my quality of life. Regrettably Mr Galo had to move on but not before contacting me to advise that my new surgeon Mr Kaliaperumal is held in extremely high regard and that I would be well cared for which proved to be the case. Due to the pandemic I was unable to meet with Mr Kaliaperumal until my pre -op appointment. He immediately put me at my ease, listened to my fears regarding further surgery and explained the procedure in a realistic but non patronising manner. A few weeks post surgery I was still in a lot of pain and fearing that I was not improving I called Mr Kaliaperumal’s secretary. Mr Kaliaperumal called back immediately and arranged a scan and consultation for the following day when he reassured me that the surgery had been successful, and my recovery was progressing as expected. This after care was so much appreciated. I gradually improved returned to work and it is no exaggeration that Mr Kaliaperumal skill as a surgeon has given me my life back.

Dr Kaliaperumal performed a strip craniotomy and rebuild on our 1 year old son for sagittal craniosynostis. His team and his care was fantastic, i had many questions that i phoned and pestered him with and he was so patient with me and always gave me the reassuarnce i needed. My wee boy was in and out within a few days and was back to his normal cheeky self within 5 days. I put that down to the outstanding care he received from the team at Sick Kids. I cannot thank them enough for everything they did for our family.

I was referred to Mr Kaliaperumal and was quickly diagnosed as having obstructive hydrocephalus, and needed to have surgery to relieve the symptoms. I saw him at the new Department of Clinical Neurosciences (DCN) located in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children. Mr Kaliaperumal was very attentive, explained everything very clearly before the procedure, and answered all of my questions. He has a very calm manner and is honest about the pros and cons of the operation. I never felt as if I was ‘just another patient’ - Mr Kaliaperumal really sees people as individuals and and is skilled at building connections with his patients in my experience. I spoke to him just before the procedure, just after it, and again the following day on the ward before I went home. When he came to see me on the ward, the day after the operation, Mr Kaliaperumal spent some time with me, going over what I should expect once I was home, and over the longer term. He referred me immediately for some additional assessment as I had previously been struggling a little with balance, however ongoing assistance was not necessary. I very much appreciated the time he spent going over what must be very routine questions (as I’m sure everyone must ask the same things!) and not once did I feel that my questions were unnecessary or that I was receiving a ‘rote response’. Mr Kaliaperumal took care to ensure that his responses related directly to my experiences and circumstances. The only request I would have is that some written information was shared at the same time - immediately after surgery it is difficult to retain all of the information provided and having something in writing would provide some reference material to look at later. Mr Kaliaperumal demonstrates excellence in patient care every day, and I was very grateful to receive treatment from someone who expresses genuine care about patient outcomes. My surgery was ‘textbook’ and has been very effective so far. I have no doubt that Mr Kaliaperumal’s attention to detail and oversight, as well as the learning from his previous experience of similar operations, made a significant contribution to the textbook nature of the surgery. I cannot recommend Mr Kaliaperumal highly enough if you are considering a neurosurgery appointment.
